Domaine François Villard, Le Gallet Blanc, Côte-Rôtie Rouge, from northern Rhône Valley, France.
Tasting Notes: Inky ruby, with powerful black raspberry, boysenberry, and exotic spice on a highly perfumed nose, alongside floral and mineral notes. Sappy and penetrating on the palate — red and blue fruit liqueur, candied violet, and licorice, finishing impressively long and smooth with rounded tannins.
Fun Fact: Named for two growers Villard purchases grapes from, Mr. Gallet and Mr. Blanc — nearly 100% Syrah grown in the schist soils of Ampuis and Saint-Cyr. This bottling has earned scores as high as 95 points from Vinous and 94 from Wine Spectator. François Villard was a chef before turning to winemaking full-time in 1989.
